Hakes, Cale earn all-NHC honors

      Bellmont junior third baseman Brian Hakes and junior centerfielder Gunnar Cale gained honor-mention on the All-NHC baseball team.
    A 1-6 league record for Bellmont meant little conference recognition for the Braves.
    Hakes had an outstanding season, leading Bellmont in seven categories. He topped BHS with a .418 average and led in hits with 33, was tied for tops in homers at six, tied for first in doubles with seven, was tops with a .477 on-base percentage, was best in slugging at .734, and led with eight walks. He struck out only 5 times in 75 official at-bats.
    Hakes was second in runs scored at 24 and second in RBI with 25.
    Cale led in runs scored at 25 and was second with 28 hits, five homers, in walks with six, and in steals with five. His .346 batting average was third on the team and he was third in slugging at .580 and in RBI with 18.
    Carroll took the league title at 7-0 and had three players on the first team, as did New Haven. Gavin Downs of Carroll was a first team pitcher, Zach Vanlandingham made it as a corner infielder and outfielder Jeremy Shelmadine made first team. For New Haven, hurler Brandon Pease was first team, as was middle infielder Lucas Salerno and outfielder Randall Metzger.
    DeKalb's Brock Nye was the all-league catcher while Josh VanMeter of Norwell was a first team corner infielder. Jared Forrest of DeKalb was a middle infield pick and Landon Curry made it as an outfielder for Norwell.
    Dave Ginder of Carroll was named NHC coach of the year.
