Gutierrez commits to IUE

Bellmont senior Allison Gutierrez has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Indiana University East starting with the 2012 season. Red Wolves coach Charlie Brown announced the signing Feb. 29.
Gutierrez is a 5-6 defensive specialist who helped Bellmont High School win the 2010 Indiana Class 3A state championship. She was an honorable mention academic all-state selection and an all-conference libero as a senior. She ranked 13th in the state with 4.5 digs per game, according to the MaxPreps Web site.
"Allison is a high-level defensive player who comes from a high school that is rich in volleyball tradition," Brown said. "We were most impressed with her serve receive. She has a unique signature habit that you'll have to look for when you come to watch her play! In addition to being solid in serve receive she has a great jump serve and does a nice job of reading the court. Allison will no doubt come in and complement a hungry defensive backcourt in 2012."
Allison is the daughter or Juan and Amy Gutierrez. She plans to major in health informatics. She chose IU East for "the volleyball team of course! And I liked the campus."
IU East is an NAIA program. IU East advanced to the NAIA national tournament in each of the past three seasons and is one of just seven programs in the NAIA to win 30 or more matches in each of the past three seasons.
