Golf outing to benefit Lou Koning

The fourth-annual Northeast Indiana Coaches vs. Cancer golf outing on Friday, July 15, will be held in Allen County, with the proceeds to benefit Lou Koning of Decatur, a teacher and basketball coach at Bellmont High School for 32 years who has leukemia.
The event will be at Brookwood Golf Course, costing $240 per foursome, which includes greens fees, use of a cart, and a meal. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Hole sponsorships cost $100.
The entry deadline is July 8. For details, contact organizer Eric Thornton at Norwell High School.
Koning will be in a foursome with coach Bill Berger of Valparaiso, Denny Richardson of Valparaiso, and Randy DeWeese of Crown Point.
Koning, 63, retired this year after a 38-year teaching and coaching career. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006. He has helped raise many thousands of dollars to fight cancer by organizing a longstanding annual free throw tournament featuring BHS girls' basketball players, since he coached varsity girls for eight years after being a reserve boys' coach for 17 years.
Thornton told the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette that Koning "was an easy choice" because "you want things to go well for Lou. He has been a good friend to all of us [basketball coaches]. It has been a rivalry over the years when Lou coached that you really looked forward to. It's not been quite the same since Lou hasn't been there."
Thornton added that Koning "was the first to congratulate you [after a game], but he hated to lose. That's what is going to help him fight through this. He took things head-on and that's what he's doing right now."
