Gerald J. “Jerry” Martin, 91, of Decatur, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
He was born on October 31, 1921, in Monroeville to the late Paul E. and Clara C. (Minnich) Martin.
Gerald married Anna Joyce Meyer on May 3, 1947, in St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church - Nix Settlement; she survives.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and its Holy Name Society. He was the oldest living member of the Knights of Columbus Msgr. J.J. Semeitz Council 864. He served as Past Grand Knight and was also in the 4th Degree Assembly 257. He was a member of American Legion Post 43.
Gerald had worked at Pennsylvania Railroad for 19 years, was the manager for the K of C for nine years and also worked for First State Bank for 17 years. He also sold Knapp shoes for 25 years and was a maker of fine wine. He served in U.S. Army Air Force as a Staff Sergeant during WWII.
Among survivors are three sons, John P. (Connie R.) Martin of Kokomo, Robert J. (Barbara Ann) Martin of Terre Haute, and Roger A. (Linda) Martin of Palm Harbor, Fla.; two daughters, Anne T. Liechty of Louisville, Ky., and Beth A. Ralston of Decatur; brother, Leo Martin of Monroeville; three sisters, Geraldine Kline of Monroeville, Joan Bauman of Wolcottville, and Maxine Sternberger of Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1–2 p.m. at Woodcrest Nursing Center and 4–8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:30 p.m. The K of C 4th Degree Honor Guard will stand guard from 6–8 p.m.
Visitation will also be from 9-10 a.m. at St. Mary's Parish Hall on Wednesday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 27, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Father David Voors will officiate.
Burial will take place in St. Rose Catholic Cemetery in Monroeville.
Preferred memorials are to St. Vincent De Paul Society, or to St. Joseph Catholic School—Tuition Assistance.
