The second annual Brittany Raymond Arnold Memorial Softball Tournament was held at Hanna Nuttman Park recently, as hundreds of family and friends turned out to honor a woman who lost her life on September 12, 2010.
A scholarship fund has been established in Brittany's memory for a non-traditional student, which was Brittany's status on the day when the vehicle she was driving unexpectedly left the roadway as she was texting.
Family and friends use the recent event to remember Brittany and to heighten awareness of the dangers of texting and driving.
Fourteen teams came together, with "Team Big Sexy" taking first place, while "Team Martin," last year's champions, finished second.
Prior to the start of the championship game, the recipient of the first Brittany Raymond Arnold Scholarship, Katie Birch, was announced.
“Brittany was a single mother of two little ones and was studying secondary education as a full-time student at IPFW. This scholar best reflects our daughter,” reported her mother, Gina Raymond.
Kristin Matthews-Bixler added that Birch is a parent and nontraditional student, studying medical assisting at Ivy Tech. The committee felt she was a good fit for the first award, Matthews-Bixler said. By helping others in the community through this scholarship, Brittany's caring and giving spirit will continue to live on, she continued.
Proceeds from the tournament, building with the Adams County Community Foundation fund, will be awarded annually as a scholarship to an area student.
The event was successful with the help of sponsors, community members, and friends and family who worked to help raise several thousand dollars, according to organizers.
