Furnace next for city depot

April 5, 2012

Slowly, but surely, the 100-year-old former Pennsylvania Railroad depot off Seventh St., near Monroe St., is coming ever closer to being ready for occupancy.
Mayor John Schultz said at Tuesday night's city council meeting that the plan commission has awarded a contract to Rorick Electric to install a new furnace (for heat and air conditioning) in the building at a cost of $5,150.    In addition, Tim Ulman has been hired to power wash the basement.
Monies for these latest steps in the process are coming from the Community Capital Development Fund.
Once these latest steps, plus some ceiling work, are completed, the mayor said, some work on the flooring and some painting will be the only steps left before the building is ready for occupancy.
Councilman Bill Crone said he would "like to see us get some kind of commitment" from a group, business, etc.  to take over the depot "so this can become a community project rather than a tax project."
He mentioned as examples of community projects what the local MOPS (Mothers of Preschool Students) accomplished in putting new playground equipment in Legion Park, and what Berne did to get its clock tower built.
" I'm hoping that someone will jump in there (depot) and take this over" when the work is completed," Crone added.
The Adams County Community Foundation has set up a fund by which people may make tax-deductible donations to the depot project. For information, call the foundation: 724-3939.

Now it is the time when you are creating the atmosphere inside.
