Fuhrman P. Miller

    Rev. Fuhrman P. Miller, 91, of Decatur, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at Woodcrest Retirement Community's Nursing Center in Decatur.
    Born on February 24, 1919, in Celina, Ohio, to Clarence and Beulah (Fuhrman) Miller, he married Audra E. Coats on March 24, 1946 in Celina. She survives.
    A 1936 graduate of Celina High School, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. After his discharge and marriage, he began his ministerial career at the Avilla E.U.B. Church while attending Goshen College in Goshen.
    He graduated from the Evangelical Seminary in Naperville, Illinois, and was fully ordained in 1957 while serving at Brushwood E.U.B. Church near Rensselaer, Indiana. He also served the Linn Grove and Old Salem (Wells County) churches before being assigned to Bethany E.U.B. Church in Decatur in 1961.
    He was instrumental in the merger of the Bethany and Trinity congregations to form Decatur E.U.B. Church in 1965 and became the senior pastor after the new building was erected on US 224 West in 1967. Upon the merger of the E.U.B. and United Methodist denominations in 1968, the church became St. Mark's United Methodist, at which he served until 1976, when he accepted a charge as senior pastor of the Goshen First U.M. Church.
    Upon his retirement from full-time ministry in 1987, he returned to Decatur, where he accepted a part-time position at St. Mark's. He continued to serve as Pastor Emeritus until his death.
    He was a member of the Decatur Optimist Club, Decatur Masonic Lodge 571, Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne, and the Northern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church, serving on conference stewardship committees for many years.
    He is survived by his wife, in Decatur; four sons, Daniel F. Miller of Danville, Indiana; Mark F. (Kathy) Miller of Bluffton; John Alan Miller of Fort Wayne; and Rev. Kevin T. (Liz) Miller of Bremen, Indiana; a brother, Ivan Miller of Celina, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Verna Alice Schaadt, who had lived in Celina.
     Visitation times are 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at Woodcrest's Porter Auditorium and 2-8 pm. Wednesday at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church's Fellowship Hall, followed by a Masonic memorial service at 8 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church.
    The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, with military rites performed at the church. Pastor Jeff Taylor and Pastor Mike Smith will be officiating.
    Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery.
    Memorials are to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church or to the Decatur Optimist Club's Scholarship Fund.
