Fred J. Filips

    Fred J. Filips, 54, Decatur, died Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at his residence.
    He was born Jan. 14, 1960, in South Bend, to Nicholas Filips and the late Lucy N. (Baker) Filips.
    He married Marie D. Brunner April 28, 1990; she survives.
    Fred was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 864. He was a Registered Nurse with Adams Memorial Hospital and previously had worked for Carter Lumber for 28 years.
  Survivors include his father and stepmother, Nick and Nelfi Filips of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a son, Joe Vergara of Decatur; a daughter, Melanie (Adam) Miller of Decatur; a brother, Steve (Betty Jo) Filips of Mound, Minn.; a sister, Beth (Michael) Maura of Orlando, Fla.; and 13 grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lisa (Heare) Filips; and his mother, Lucy N. Filips.
    A funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Deacon Jerry Kohrman officiating.
    Burial will be in the church cemetery at a later date.
    Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
    Preferred memorials are to Riley Hospital for Children.
