Four inches falls here; frigid temps to worsen

December 13, 2010

JUST IN CASE ... Despite a winter storm watch that was in effect for Adams County — or more likely because of it — area residents headed to the grocery stores to stock up on supplies Sunday just in case predictions of crippling amounts of snowfall came to fruition. (Photo by J Swygart)

Superintendent, Shaun Roe, was equally upbeat as he said all roads are open, although a north wind was causing some drifting in open areas.
Gilbert said his department, with one employee off work for medical reasons, had eight trucks in operation starting at 3 a.m. and had most of the 55 to 60 miles of streets plowed by about 8 a.m. No problems developed during that time, he added.
Salting will be the next step on the streets, according to Gilbert.
Roe said the county crew started work at 7 a.m. with 11 snowplow trucks and one road grader, and no problems were experienced.
North Adams Schools were closed today, but at last word Adams Central and South Adams were still operating on two-hour delays.
Meanwhile, authorities say winds causing snow drifts up to six feet high in northwestern Indiana stranded some people in their cars overnight.
Officials in LaPorte and Porter counties issued emergency orders telling drivers to stay off the roads as the area had a foot or more of lake-effect snow and winds up to 30 mph.
LaPorte County sheriff’s Deputy Andy Hynek says high drifts were closing all east-west roads and that nearly 100 abandoned vehicles had been reported. He says some people have been stranded in their vehicles for 12 hours.
Hynek didn’t know how many people were stranded, but many were in a 10-mile stretch of U.S. 30 around the town of Wanatah.
Dozens of school districts across Indiana are closed Monday because of a winter storm with blowing and drifting snow.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for parts of northern Indiana, where heavy lake effect snow was expected to drop an additional 5 to 10 inches of snow today.
