Former mayor dies

    Former longtime Decatur Mayor Fred R. Isch, 81, passed away early today at Adams Evergreen Apartments. Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home.
    “This is a huge loss for our community,” said current Mayor John Schultz when contacted this morning. “He was just a nice fellow. He did what he thought was right, he didn’t care about the politics. He just did what he thought was right. It’s a sad day for me. It’s a sad day for our community.”
    Isch served on the school board and was a member of Decatur City Council before being elected mayor. His five terms as mayor featured many accomplishments. Twenty years of sewage projects and water towers, 13th Street improvements and downtown lighting, 2nd Street improvements and major flooding. Twenty years of trying to handle everyone’s problems.
