Two Bellmont High School graduates who are longtime friends and current college roommates had great weekends in separate sports for Indiana Tech.
Zach Wetzel fired a one-under par 71 at Brookwood Golf Club in Fort Wayne to finish second in the U. of Saint Francis Spring Invite, leading his team to a runnerup finish. Ten teams and 60 golfers competed in the event.
Mount Vernon Nazarene, led by medalist Charlie Phillips, who carded a 68, won the event. Bethel College finished third, Taylor U. fourth and Huntington U. fifth.
On Monday, Wetzel was named the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) men’s golfer of the week.
At Grand Rapids, Michigan, a career weekend with the bat by Brian Hakes wasn’t enough to get the Tech baseball team a win as the Warriors dropped back-to-back doubleheaders to Davenport University.
Hakes, the Warriors’ starting catcher, rapped out seven hits in nine trips, including a triple, in the four games, and was on base 10 times in 12 trips overall. He caught 25 of the 32 innings in the four games, boosted his season average to .324 and his conference average to .458 in eight games.
Hakes has had 11 hits in the last seven games, with two doubles and a triple.
Both Wetzel, the son of Todd and Rhonda Wetzel, and Hakes, the son of Greg and Jill Hakes, are 2012 graduates of Bellmont.
