Fireworks boom, sound fizzles

July 6, 2011

BOOMER FOR BOB ... A member of the family of the late Bob Bombka of Decatur signs a huge, 12-inch diameter fireworks shell at Monday's Fourth of July event here, while another family member waits his turn. Many people signed the shell, which was exploded as the finale to the annual fireworks show in tribute to Bombka, who died in February after 18 years of supervising the fireworks extravaganza. Monday, his family, TND Fireworks, carried on. (Photo by Eric Mann)

Decatur's Fourth of July celebration was a dandy, with ideal weather, a huge crowd, the well-deserved honoring of two deceased local men, and a great fireworks show.
There was one a hitch, though, and it was a major one: problems with the sound system.
Chief celebration organizer Adam Eguia attended Tuesday night's city council meeting to issue plenty of praise and thanks, and to address problems with the sound system.
The positioning of the speakers and a wireless microphone with limited range were at the root of the matter, Eguia said. Many people in the large crowd couldn't hear the ceremonies, including the posthumous honoring of Sgt. Phillip Jenkins and Bob Bombka.
Mayor John Schultz told Eguia he would be glad to help him seek a better setup, and said perhaps the answer would be to rent a system.
Otherwise, all went well, Eguia explained, adding that he and the sponsors are looking forward to a 20th consecutive year.
He publicly thanked the city administration and council, city police and reserves, officer Jim Franze for transporting the Jenkins family, Richards restaurant for providing the family with a meal, and three other city departments: fire, street and parks. The celebration sponsors, plus Walmart and Rural King (providing a place for the hot dog wagon which helps fund the fireworks) also were thanked.
The celebration is now on Facebook, Eguia said, and over 50 photos from the event are on the site.
