Fall inside silo sends Bunge employee to hospital

June 28, 2013

A probable fall inside one of the tall silos at Bunge North America on Decatur's north side sent a flurry of rescuers from the Decatur Fire Department, police department and paramedic units to the scene, not knowing what they would find upon arrival.
Bunge Safety Manager Gary Teeple said the bottom of the enormous structures are not flat but cylindrical in shape, making maneuverability difficult at times for workers.
"We knew it was serious, and we knew it was more than we could handle," said Teeple.
While at the scene, Teeple was unsure of the exact details involving the injury, but was able to say it was almost certainly a fall, not a collapse or suffocation.
The name of the victim has not yet been released and no further information was available.
