EvenStart at NA elminated due to low enrollment

June 11, 2014

PARTING GIFT — Deb Bergman attended her final meeting Tuesday evening as a member of the North Adams school board. Her term expires at the end of June, with member-elect Jim Voglewede to assume the seat effective July 1. Bergman is pictured with Supt. Brent Lehman.

North Adams school board members voted Tuesday to eliminate the EvenStart Program. The decision came with numerous other positions being eliminated to best utilize the staff employed with North Adams.
EvenStart was created to provide child care services to North Adams students who have children to allow the young mothers to graduate from high school. According to North Adams Superintendent Brent Lehman, enrollment was extremely low, with only two children enrolled at the end of the school year. The program was also open to the infants of staff members.
Lehman explained that teachers who opted to receive childcare were charged a daycare fee.
North Adams students with infants received free child care in support of their educational endeavors.
