Erie Haven added the Adams-Wells Koufax Tourney title to its regular-season crown, but it took a little longer than they had hoped Tuesday in the championship round.
McIntire Heating & Air handed Erie Haven it's first loss of the season in the title round opener Thursday night, but the Mixers gathered themselves in the middle of the second game and took the lead on a triple by Trace Bauer in the bottom of the fifth and went on to score a 7-4 victory, capping a 19-1 season.
The Mixers also needed a comeback performance by standout hurler Jordan Hilyard, who took the loss (9-2) in the first game. He yielded five hits and four runs in the setback, but he came back to start the final game and went all six innings, striking out six with five hits allowed, and five walks in six innings. He had 12 strikeouts on the day.
Ryan Okoniewski game in to pitch the seventh, but walked two batters. An infield error loaded the bases. The Mixers then turned in a crucial double play. A grounder went to Hilyard at third and he fired to catcher Kyle Wittwer for the force there, and his throw to first beat the batter for the double-play. Bauer got the final on a ball slapped back to the mound.
With the win in opener, McIntire finished at 18-3 for the season, beating Erie Haven once, but losing two times, once in eight innings.
Brett Baker tripled and doubled, driving in a pair for Erie Haven in that last game. In that key two-run fifth, Baker reached on an error and Hilyard drove him in with a looping single. Bauer tripled down the right field line to score Hilyard and put Erie up 5-4.
Erie added two more in the sixth. Baker tripled with two out, scoring one run, but McIntire relayed the ball home with Zeser throwing to the plate to get Evan Selking trying to score. Hilyard then singled in Baker for the final run.
Troy Dalstrom, who tripled with three hits in the first game, put McIntire up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first inning of the title game. Baker tied the game with a double. A Carter Friedt sacrifice fly put Erie up 2-1 in the second.
Tony Busse walked to start the fourth for McIntire, then Dalstrom lined the ball in the gap in right-center to score Busse. An infield error brought in Dalstrom, then Jeremy Razo slammed an RBI single for the 4-2 McIntire lead. An RBI single by Erie's Jacob Hall (2 hits in the game) closed the score to 4-3. Erie Haven had two runners picked off on the bases that inning.
Dahlstrom had two hits in that game for McIntire. McBarnes went into the sixth inningn, striking out seven with 9 hits and five walks allowed.
In the first game, Dalstrom opened the scoring with a two-run triple in the four-run McIntire third as the Heaters took charge. Parker Zeser and and McBarnes limited the Mixers to five hits to seal the win. Zeser was the winner, going five scoreless innings with five strikeouts, two walks and three hits allowed. McBarnes fanned two, walked one and allowed two runs on two hits.
Hilyard allowed four runs and Bauer five for Erie Haven.
Brett Baker homered, driving the ball deep to center, over the fielder's head, and that accounted for the Erie runs in the sixth inning. He also tripled. Hall, Bauer and Friedt singled.
Zeser went four-for-four while Dahlstrom had three hits and two RBI. Busse singled in a pair of runs. Jordan Amacker drove in a run with two hits. McBarnes singled in a run.
Amacker accounted for a double-play in that first game, snagging a fly ball in right field and throwing out Hilyard at the plate. Heads up McIntire defensive play keyed the win.
