Earl M. Saunders III

    Earl M. Saunders III, 71, of rural Decatur, died at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at the Department of Veterans' Affairs Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Born on July 1, 1939, in Christiansburg, Virginia, he was the son of Earl M. Saunders Jr. and Clara A. (Sowers) Saunders. His father preceded him in death.
    He married Judith D. Morlan on October 21, 1961, and she also preceded him in death, on September 28, 2007.
    Earl served his country in the United States Army with the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, "The Blackhorse Regiment." He was a member of American Legion Post 43 in Decatur, The Blackhorse Association, the Selective Service Committee, Moose Lodge 1311 in Decatur, the NIPSCO Club, and the Grievance Committee of Local 12775 of the United Steelworkers.
    Surviving are his mother, Clara Saunders of Radford, Virginia; two sons, Scott E. (Susan) Saunders of Indianapolis and David L. Saunders of Decatur; two daughters, Lynn (Barney) Rickord of Decatur and Laurie (Dave) Miller of Waterloo, Indiana; three sisters, Doris (Jack) Gillespie of Radford, Virginia; Patricia (Danny) Bishop of Christiansburg, Virginia; and Sue (Rob) Sherwood of Pulaski, Virginia; and 11 grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stefanie Rickord.
    Visitation is 4-8 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010, at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur.
    The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010, at 10 a.m. in Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home.
    Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery of Decatur, with military graveside rites by the color guard from American Legion Post 43.
    Memorials may be made to the Department of Veterans' Affairs Hospital.
