Dueling petitions Lehman seeks to stop library Monroe effort

June 5, 2013

Dueling petitions in the Monroe Township portion of the town of Monroe ultimately will determine whether residents there will become members of the Adams Public Library System (APLS).
Last month the library district initiated a petition drive seeking to add the portion of Monroe Township which lies within the corporation limits to the APLS district. To reach that goal, valid signatures of at least 20 percent of the registered voters in the targeted area — known as Monroe/Monroe and located south of State Route 124 — are necessary. Registered voters in Monroe/Monroe have been carrying the petitions door-to-door and have until July 10 to complete their efforts.
But Monroe resident Al Lehman this week announced he will circulate a petition of remonstrance in an effort to stop Monroe/Monroe from joining the Adams Public Library System.
