Driver is said critical
A Decatur woman is listed in critical condition this morning at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne following a single-vehicle mishap at 7:30 p.m. Monday. In another incident, a woman was struck by a driver later cited for driving while intoxicated.
In the 7:30 mishap, a witness told the Adams County Sheriff's Department he observed a car headed southeast on Salem Road near U.S. 33 suddenly leave the road and enter a ditch; he said the vehicle flew sideways approximately 10-15 feet in the air, according to the department's report.
The vehicle, driven by Delane A. Barger, 46, S. 13th Street, left the road, traveled approximately 323 feet, according to the report, and struck a culvert. The vehicle then went approximately another 200 feet in the ditch and rolled over several times.
During the incident, Barger was ejected and thrown 64 feet from where the vehicle came to rest.
Paramedics transferred Barger to Adams Memorial Hospital with what the police report said were incapacitating injuries to her entire body. After initial emergency treatment, Barger was airlifted by Samaritan helicopter to Parkview.
Police estimated between $10,001-$25,000 in damage was done to the vehicle and property.
Decatur police investigated a 12:40 a.m. accident today after a person walking in an alley near Second and Madison Street was struck by a car.
Police said Summer M. Kolter, 21, Bollman Street, Decatur, told police she was pushed down in the alley and a pickup truck driven by Robert L. Hedrick, 42, Royal Center, ran over her leg.
Police arrested Hedrick for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) and causing serious bodily injury, and OWI and endangering a person. He remained in custody this morning at the county jail under a $200 cash and $7,500 surety bond.
Paramedics took Kolter to the hospital where she was treated and released.
Under $1,001 in damage was done to the Hedrick vehicle.
