Delbert D. Sprunger

    Delbert D. Sprunger, 83, of Decatur, a longtime civic leader in Berne, passed away on Saturday, August 27, in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on September 1, 1927, in Adams County to Clarence and Lorine Habegger Sprunger.
    He married Ida Irene Zuercher on September 22, 1946; she preceded him in death on April 11, 2009.
    Delbert and his wife owned the Musik Haus in Berne for 30 years and he was widely known in a 50-mile area as piano-tuning technician.
    He was a member of First Mennonite Church in Berne, a former president of the Mennonite Choral Society, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.
    In community affairs at Berne, Delbert served on the Swiss Days committee for 15 years and was its chairman for three years. He also was a former president and executive manager of the Berne Chamber of Commerce, a Boy Scout troop committee chairman, a former president of the high school music boosters, and a member of the South Adams Arts Council.
    Surviving are one son, Erick Steven Sprunger (and wife Mary Jane) of Sacramento, California; one brother, Logan Sprunger of Berne; and one sister, Mrs. Sam (Donna Mae) Sprunger of Schererville.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Jacqueline Burnett Smith, Jean Habegger, and Juanita Herman.
    A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, in the chapel at First Mennonite Church, with Pastor Jerry Flueckiger officiating.
    Burial will be in MRE Cemetery, rural Berne.
    Visiting hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday in Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.
    Preferred memorials are to First Mennonite Church, the Berne CDC, and/or The Salvation Army.
