Decatur Mayor John Schultz appeared before the Adams County Commissioners Monday afternoon to officially ask them to consider locating the planned new superior court complex on 1st Street — at the site where the adandoned Schaeffer building currently sits — rather than a location on 3rd Street, where demolishing the Collier Insurance Building and a private residence to accommodate the construction would be required to complete the construction.
Just as he did before Adams County Council two weeks ago, Schultz told commissioners the city was prepared to help sway the decision-making process in favor of the 1st Street location by offering to pay the difference between the acquisition and demolition costs of the two sites.
To further sweeten the pot, Schultz on Monday stated for the first time the city would be willing to pick up the cost of an appraisal of the Schaeffer building to help commissioners pay for that part of the process. He noted the money to cover both offers would be generated by Local Option Income Tax funds.
