Decatur planning to go the GIS route

March 8, 2012

Decatur is going the Global Information System (GIS) route.
City council on Tuesday night unanimously supported Mayor John Schultz's request to hire a summer intern to help the city collect information for the project.
Ethan Snyder, a resident of the Decatur area, currently is a student at Ball State University majoring in Global Information Systems. He will be hired for a two-mont period, at $9 an hour.
"He'll help us get all the information collected," which will be a major undertaking, the mayor said. Once the system is completed, the city will know how many manholes it has, how many water lines and sewer lines and much, much more, he noted.
"It will be very valuable information," Street/Sanitation Superintendent Jeremy Gilbert said.
County officials will assist, Schultz said, by allowing the city to use its GIS system and information at no cost.
