Dan R. Kirkendall

    Dan R. Kirkendall, 71, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at his residence.
    He was born on Monday, March 10, 1941, in Indianapolis.
    On July 8, 1978, he married Carolyn R. Ontrop in Portland; she survives in Decatur.
    Dan served his country in the United States Army from 1963-1965.
    He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville, where he was a former Eucharist minister.
    Dan was a graduate of Western High School in Russiaville, Ind., and a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture and a Masters in Education. After 20 years as a teacher, he retired in January 2004 with the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
    Among survivors are his daughter, Sarah R. Kirkendall of Kalamazoo, Mich.; sister, Marcia L. (George) Penry of Greenfield, Ind.; and brother, Greg Duncan of Sharpsville, Ind.
    He was preceded in death by a brother, James Snyder.
    Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, January 4, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
    A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, also at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Catholic Church. Father Joseph D'Souza will be officiating.
    Burial will be in St. Rose Catholic Cemetery.
    Preferred memorials are Masses to the church or St. Joseph Catholic School Centenary Project.
