On a cold and windy day at Cross Creek Golf Club, it was the home team Cross Creek who defended its Adams County Cup title, scoring a 20-10 victory against the group from Limberlost.
The opening round was two-man scramble competition, with Mike Macke/Drew Norby, Todd Kiser/Corbin Kuhnle, Mike Ainsworth/Brandon Razo and Scott Ainsworth/Marty Simonson posting wins for Cross Creek, while Bob Goulet/John Goulet claimed a win for Limberlost. The other match tied when Paul and Jimmy Baker went eagle-birdie to win their last two holes and earn a half point, leaving the score 4.5-1.5 in favor of Cross Creek at the end of the round.
The second round was a better ball competition. Kraig Hart/Todd Kiser were the only winners for Cross Creek, while Steve Pilkington/Kevin Geyer took a win for Limberlost. Four matches tied and the 3-3 left the overall score at CC 7.5, LL 4.5 .
The last of the two-man matches were played as modified alternate shot format. Posting Cross Creek wins were ToddKiser/Paul Baker, Kraig Hart/AJ Kalver, Martin Simonson/Drew Norby and Mike Ainsworth/Luke “Hoss” Ainsworth. Jeff Bauermeister/Kevin Geyer claimed Limberlost’s win, while one match tied. The total after three rounds saw CC leading 12-6. The score meant Cross Creek needed to win only three of the 12 singles matches to hold the Cup in the tournament format.
Captain/2012 Scratch Player of the Year Luke Ainsworth found a great mix of pairings and the team won eight of the singles matches. Match winners included Kraig Hart, Scott Ainsworth, Todd Kiser, Martin Simonson, Mike Macke, Luke Ainsworth, Drew Norby, and Terry Laurent. Limberlost’s winners were Mike Wynn, Rob Bruns, Ron Sprunger and John Flueckiger and the final match score was CC 20, LL 10.
Some highlights on the day for Cross Creek, in addition to some spectacular shot making, were Todd Kiser earning the coveted Jim Daniels Memorial MVP with a 4-win day, Drew Norby stretching his remarkable 9-year streak with three or more wins, a (27-2-6 in that stretch), Martin Simonson with three wins and a tie and Kraig Hart with three wins. Captain Luke Ainsworth missed the morning session to take the LSAT but made the afternoon and went 2-0. Every member of the Cross Creek squad scored at least one point. Limberlost’s leaders for the day were Rob Bruns with two wins and a tie and Kevin Geyer with two wins.
