County teams compete in New Haven Invite

    Several season and career best times were posted by Bellmont cross country runners in the New Haven Invitational held at the Plex in Fort Wayne.
    Both BHS teams finished in the top half of the competition in their division with both the Braves and Squaws taking eighth out of 19 teams. Adams Central and South Adams also competed on the day in both boys and girls races.
    In the boys race for Bellmont, Josh Porter was the top BHS finisher going 17:38 for 26th place (out of 177 runners). That was a career best for Porter by four seconds. Adam Garner took 33rd in 18:01, Adam Corral was 36th in 18:02, Michael Braun posted an 18:49 time for 70th, Connor Gallogly was 78th in 19:01, Tyler Fenwick took 88th in 19:20, Thomas McNamara was 138th in 20:55, Ben Helmrich ended up 152nd in 21:46, Adam Ralston was 167th in 23:02, and Trey Schisler took 176th with a 24:38 time.
    Scoring season best times for the Bellmont boys were Corral (14 seconds), McNamara (37 seconds), Helmrich (35 seconds), and Schisler (over one minute).
    Josh Neideck of Eastbrook won the New Haven AA division with a time of 16:24 while Guerin Catholic was the team winner at 62. Frankton was a close second at 67 and those two schools were the only teams to break the 100 point barrier. Bellmont rolled up 219 points, just 17 points behind seventh place Norwell, a team they'll see again this coming Saturday at the Plex in the annual NHC Cross Country Tourney.
    South Adams has one of the stronger boys teams in cross country in northeast Indiana this year but coach Clint Anderson opted to take advantage of the opportunity to run his Class A team in the upper class Class AAA division. Carroll nosed out Bloomington South for the team title. The Starfires totaled 404 points in the AAA race and finished 16th out of 24 team in that division.
    Brody Shane and Joel Hawbaker were among the top 100 finishers with Shane 26th in 16:49.47 and Hawbaker 51st in 17:41.15. Other SA finishers were Sawyer Miller, 128th in 18:02.81, Cody Sprunger, 135th in 18:06.83, Andrew Steffen, 154th in 18:16.63, Simon Sprunger, 157th in 18:20.01, Daniel Velasco, 171st in 18:31.71, Clayton Rhoades, 188th in 18:37.57, Daniel Steffen, 191st in 18:39.03, David Steffen, 356th in 20:46.13, and Brett Affolder, 441st in 23:36.03.
    There were a total of 463 runners in the class AAA race.
    In the class A boys race, Adams Central was seventh out of 13th teams with 201 points. Oak Hill won the team title with 46 followed by Blackhawk Christian 103, Churubusco 106, Prairie Heights 142, Northwestern 144, Northeastern 175, Adams Central 201, Bishop Luers 211, Canterbury 222, Southern Wells 222, Southwood 235, Westview 285, and Woodlan 306.
    Three Adams Central runners broke the 19 minute barrier in the boys race led by Calvin Isch who was 36th in 18:41, David Teeple, 37th in 18:48, and Ben Lehman, 40th in 18:57. Other Jets included Nick Baumer, 43rd in 19:09, Gavin Kaehr, 45th in 19:16, Michael Yoder, 70th in 19:54, Tucker Miller, 74th in 20:01, Derek Ellinger, 106th in 21:09, Zac Yoder, 111th in 21:38, Chance Reynolds, 115th in 21:47, Dillon Hartman, 118th in 22:31, and Jacob McAfee, 129th in 23:14.
