County council okays additional appropriation for public defender fund
The Adams County Council approved the transfer of $25,000 in additional appropriations into the supplemental public defender fund to cover expenses incurred by hiring outside attorneys to handle the caseload of indigent defendants of appointed Pauper Counsel Joe Johnson III.
Johnson has been suspended from the position by the Adams County Public Defender Board following the filing of criminal charges against him by a special prosecutor.
Two minor misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and one felony count of making a false statement were filed against Johnson on May 19. The criminal trespass charges stem from a protective order filed against Johnson by a former client of the Adams County Public Defender’s office with whom Johnson reportedly had at one time become romantically involved and most recently began to harass, according to court documents.
