Council unyielding in pay dispute

Service Complex Maintenance Supervisor Dave Meyer queried Adams County Councilors about his position and the salary that comes with it at Tuesday's regular monthly meeting of the Adams County Council.
Meyer presented information demonstrating the savings he has brought about in managing his department, as well as financial figures suggesting he is underpaid with respect to the scope of his responsibilities and by comparison with other department heads on the county payroll. Meyer noted that the 2008 budget for his department was $321,715. By bringing about cost-saving measures, Meyer stated the current budget has been decreased to approximately $261,000, a savings of 21 percent from five years ago.
In reference to his salary, Meyer said that as an hourly employee he had earned "about $14 per hour" working for the county. Now as a department head, he has seen a $1.52 cut in his hourly rate, while taking on considerably more responsibility and being on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"I just feel like you don't know what it is I'm actually doing," Meyer told council. Considering the added responsibilities associated with his position, Meyer said, "I feel like I deserve department head pay. I'd just like to request that you look at it (his salary) again."
