Cornett fans 14 as Marlins take DDS

June 22, 2011

Cordell Cornett struck out 14 and the Monmouth Fleming Marlins held off Decatur Dental 7-4 to earn the top seed in the Hoosier East Baseball Alliance Reese baseball tournament, which begins Friday.
Dental did sock 10 hits off Cornett.
Lucas Strickler took the loss, striking out 5 with 5 hits allowed in four-plus innings. Jordan Baker struck out 4 with 2 hits allowed in a strong relief appearance.
Drew Hoover just missed a grand slam home run for the Marlins as he slammed a long fly to deep left-center with the bases-loaded. The ball hit the very top of the fence and bounced straight up. The ball was caught, but it was ruled a double. Two runs scored. Hoover later doubled in another run. Austin Heckert doubled with 2 hits for the Marlins, now 7-5 on the season.
Dental slipped to 6-6 with the loss.
