Collector coin sales to boost 175th party

June 27, 2011

Leaders of Decatur's 175th anniversary celebration have announced that another souvenir is available: a collector coin in a choice of two metals, antique bronze and pure silver.
The coin has one side with words saying, "Blazing the location of Decatur, Indiana" and an image of Samuel L. Rugg, the city's founder, and a friend, Thomas Johnson, blazing an oak tree on June 23, 1836. On the other side of the coin is the 175th anniversary logo.
Decatur and Adams County came into existence in 1836, 20 years after Indiana became a state.
The coins are $12 for the bronze version and $65 for the limited edition silver version.
Bronze coins are available at the official anniversary retail sites: Yvonne Marie's Antique Mall, Ritter's Flowers and Gifts, The Next Page Bookstore and More, and The Homeplace.
Silver coins may be bought by calling Larry Isch: 724-7429.
The coins will also be sold at the weekly Farmers' Markets, held on Thursdays from 3:30-6:30 p.m. on the parking lot at Riverside Center.
Anniversary organizers are still selling name spaces on the Samuel Rugg Monument that will be put in place downtown by the St. Marys River and will be unveiled on August 28. For more information, call Isch; Max Miller, 223-0102; or the Decatur Chamber of Commerce,724-2604.
