The City of Decatur has established an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance plan and Street/Sanitation Superintendent Jeremy Gilbert, who heads up the operation, gave city council a compliance update at council's Tuesday meeting.
Early last fall, as required by the federal government, the city established an ADA transition plan to comply with current ADA standards, Gilbert said.    To date, the city has 207 curb ramps which comply, 83 which require some form of modification, and 221 which need reconstruction. The priority areas, he pointed out, are churches, schools, retail establishments and locations which provide public or government services.
The 2012 repair and/or replacement plan has been established, but Gilbert urged the public to offer suggestions on places where barriers on minor streets should be removed. They will be considered, he said.
To file a complaint or to have a barrier removed, people should contact Gilbert at the street department, 724-3356, or e-mail him at: jeremygilbert@embarqmail.com
    Following is the plan:
    1. Fourth St. and Adams St., replace two ramps.
    2. Fourth St. and Jefferson St., replace two ramps.
    3. Third St. and Jefferson St., replace two ramps.
    4. Tenth St. and Jackson St., replace three ramps.
    5. Everhart Dr. and Grant St., replace tgwo ramps.
    6. Eleventh St. and Dayton Ave., replace two ramps.
    7. Twelfth St. and Dayton Ave., replace one ramp.
    8. North Adams Drive and Monroe St., replace two ramps.
By the end of this year, the city should have 223 ramps which comply, 81 in need of some construction, and 207 in need of construction.
