City lends support to downtown jail

April 16, 2014

Locating a new jail and court building downtown may not be ideal in all ways, but its a far better option than constructing it out of town, Decatur City Councilman Cam Collier said Tuesday in lending the city’s support to the decision by county officials to place the building on First Street.
County officials have not announced any specific location, but speculation holds that it will be a block or two south of Monroe Street.
Collier’s support followed views expressed by Mayor John Schultz at Tuesday night’s city council meeting. The mayor said he supports keeping the jail in Decatur and believes “the selection of First Street is a good idea.”
