City awaits ‘Stellar’ news

March 19, 2014

Decatur city officials were on pins and needles Tuesday evening, anxiously awaiting word that is expected sometime later this week on the city’s application of an Indiana Stellar Communities grant that — if awarded — could pump $14 million or more into dozens of local municipal improvement projects.
Mayor John Schultz updated Decatur City Council on the status of the grant application during Tuesday’s regular council meeting. He said 14 cities throughout the state had applied for the Stellar Communities grant funding.
“We haven’t heard anything yet,” Schultz said, admitting his nervousness with the wait.
The list of 14 applicants will be pared by state officials to six, the mayor said, and representatives of the various state agencies involved in the program will make personal visits to each of those six communities before selecting finalists — likely two — to receive the maximum awards.
