Two events to open the Christmas season in downtown Decatur have been scheduled for Sunday, November 27.
From 2-4 p.m., a free gingerbread cookie-decorating contest will be held at Marko's On Second, a restaurant at 135 S. Second St.
Prizes will be awarded each age group, treats will be available for everyone, and Santa Claus will visit.
The winners can get their prizes at the day's second event: the annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony on the lawn of the Adams County Courthouse, across Second St. from Marko's, at 6 p.m.
The Christmas tree event, open to the public, will involve illuminating a large fir tree on the lawn, seasonal songs sung by Darlene Double, singing of Christmas carols by everyone who attends, lighting of candles, and a reading of the famous poem "The Night Before Christmas" by Angie Foreman.
Also part of the festivities will be free cookies and hot wassail, potato soup from Marko's On Second, and other hot beverages from The Java Bean Cafe in downtown Decatur.
The two events are being sponsored by The Classic Crimper Styling Salon in Decatur and Marko's On Second.
