Child hit in street said ‘serious’

October 11, 2011

A Decatur child was admitted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne after being injured at 4:48 p.m. Monday when she was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of 13th and Washington streets.
The Decatur Police Department reported this morning that, according to witnesses, Kayla S. Hershberger, 8, Cambridge Court, Decatur, walked onto the crosswalk in front of a pickup truck driven by Mike A. Soto, 41, Russell Street, Decatur.
She suffered a fractured femur and head lacerations and was listed in serious condition this morning by officials at Parkview.
Soto told police he was southbound on 13th Street in the inside lane and changed lanes since a semi was next to him. As he approached the intersection of 13th and Washington in the outside lane, he suddenly noticed the child had walked out from the curb.
Witnesses told police that Soto tried to brake and swerve to the right to avoid hitting the child, but was unsuccessful.
Damage to the pickup was estimated at under $1,001.
