Charles E. “Chuck” Ripley, 81,Plymouth, passed away suddenly in his Elliot Avenue home of natural causes on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013.
Chuck was a native of Adams County and was born in Blue Creek Township near Decatur on April 12, 1932, to the late Leland A. and Midge C. (Davis) Ripley. He married Norma Louise Chattin on April 15, 1956, in Huntington, she survives.
He was one of nine children in the Ripley household. He graduated with the class of 1950, from Pleasant Mills High School. He was active in the basketball and 4-H programs as well as helping on the farm day to day.
Chuck served his country from 1952-1954, in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He served the Plymouth community as a three-term City Councilman of the 1st District, three-terms as Chairman of the Solid Waste District, served on the City Insurance Committee and Center Township Advisory Board for eight years.
He had a strong faith and was active at the First United Methodist Church in Plymouth and a lifetime member of the Union United Methodist Church in Adams County. He was a longtime member of Rotary International.
Chuck had a lifetime automotive interest, from ensuring their repair as a claims adjuster, supervisor and regional claims manager for Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance from which he reitred after 41 years, to parting them out as salvage with Indiana's largest 'legal' junk yard, Superior Auto in Logansport and Bedford. He served on the Board of Directors for I-CAR in the 70's-90's, as a past board member and State President of Indiana Recyclers, past President of Fort Wayne Adjusters Association and member of the South Bend Adjusters Association. He served on the Board of Directors for I-ACT (Indiana Anti-Car Theft committee) and was the head of the legislative Sub-committee for I-ACT and lobbied in Washington D.C.
The couple were blessed with three sons and their families, Michael (Susie) Ripley of Indianapolis and their children; Elliot, Melinda, Michelle, Jessica, Eric, Jared and Hannah; Mitchael (Lori) Ripley of Greenwood and their children; Amanda, Rachael and Anthony; Mark (Diane) Ripley of Bradenton, Fla. and their children; Heather and Holly. three step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren complete the family.
Siblings include; Enid J. Roberts of Columbus, Marcus J. (Penny) Ripley of Decatur, Thomas M. (Arvilla) Ripley of Lexington, Ky., Michael K. (Emily)Ripley of Fort Wayne and Pauline (Marvin) Joray of Wentworth, S.D.; three sisters-in-law, Marlene (James) Habegger, Betty Ripley and Sue Ripley, all of Decatur; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Roger and John Ripley.
Visitation will from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St. in Plymouth and also from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, 520 N 2nd street in Decatur.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Union United Methodist Church, Co. Rd. 650 E. south of St. Rd. 124 in Adams County with military honors accorded Chuck by members of the American Legion Post 43.
Burial will follow in the Tricker Cemetery in Blue Creek Township.
