Case speeds way to 3 blues in AC girls track debut
Despite first-high-school-meet jitters, a bone-chilling breeze and a tough Eastbrook opponent, Adams Central's new freshman girls track class did just fine Tuesday at the AC oval, taking five individual firsts and two more frosh were on the winning 3200 relay team in the 79-44 loss.
"There were all nervous and didn't know what to expect, and then we're going up against a very good Eastbrook team," noted veteran Jets' coach Bart Lehman. "But despite the fact that we had a lot of first-time runners and so many underclassmen (10 of 18 are freshman), we did really well."
Frosh sprinter Briona Case made a solid case for her track future with wins for the Jets in the 100 (14.0), 200 (29.7) and long jump (15'5"). Her chance for four blues slipped away as the 400 meter relay team was disqualified for not exchanging the baton in the right area. "It was my fault because I had them stretched out pretty far, and we haven't worked on it enough," said Lehman.
Frosh MaKenna Macklin went 18.5 to win the 100 low sticks. Frosh Erica Bluhm went 54.0 to take the 300 intermediate hurdles for the Jets.
Frosh Kayla Isch and Olivia Mishler led off the 3200 relay. Junior Ashley Faurote ran the third leg, and junior standout Leah Spangler delivered the win when she ran the Eastbrook anchor runner down and passed her for the blue ribbon. Spangler went 2:49, a strong time, on her last leg.
Case led a sweep in the long jump, beating teammate Ashley Faurote by over 10 inches. Macklin took third. The AC team went 12:21 and won by six seconds.
Isch ran the 1600, finishing fourth, and she added a third in the 3200.
Freshman Sydnee Reinhard took second in the shot put at 24'9" and added a third in the discus.
"Eastbrook had a lot more depth and most of our girls were running varsity for the first time. We're looking forward to running Bellmont and Jay County Thursday at Jay County," added Lehman.
Karissa Kitts won the shot put (29'6") and the discus (86'8") for the Panthers. Drake won the 400 and took seconds in the 100 and 200 for Eastbrook.
