An Adams County Sheriff's Department report said the accident occurred when a buggy driven by John V. Shetler, Jr., 19, rural Geneva, pulled out of a driveway near C.R. 300S onto U.S. 27 into the path of a car driven northbound by Brad A. Canter, 38, Fort Wayne.
The occupants of the Canter vehicle were injured in the resulting collision and taken to area hospitals.
Brad Canter sustained a fractured skull and was rushed by paramedics to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne where he is listed in fair condition today. His wife, Angelique M., 37, and children Nicholas, Abbigail, and Ryan (no ages listed), were all taken by EMS to Adams Memorial Hospital; they were treated for minor injuries and released from the emergency room.
Shetler was not injured and refused medical treatment at the scene.
Shetler was arrested by the sheriff's department for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing serious bodily injury, and for minor consuming. He was later released from the Adams County Jail after posting a $250 cash and $7,500 surety bond.
