As a doctor specializing in treating emergency room cases, Dr. Jonathan Schmitz of Indianapolis is involved regularly in matters of life and death.
As a graduate of Butler University and Virginia Commonwealth University, making a decision about which team to support in Saturday’s men’s basketball Final Four semi-final game is much easier.
“His heart is with Butler,” says Jonathan’s mother, Chris Schmitz of Geneva, who, along with her husband, Karl, owns and operates the McDonald’s restaurants in Decatur and Berne.
Jonathon, who turned 29 on Thursday, is a 2000 graduate of South Adams High School, a 2004 graduate of Butler (with a major in chemistry, a minor in communications, additional studies in BU’s pre-med program, and time spent playing trombone in the BU band), and a 2008 graduate of VCU’s medical school.
Since 2008, he has been doing his medical internship in the emergency rooms of two busy Indianapolis hospitals: Methodist and Wishard.
Mrs.Schmitz said he is quite attuned to working with police and fire personnel in the setting of an ER, and that Jonathon decided in high school that he wanted to be a doctor.
Jonathon was married in 2010 and his wife, Brooke, is an elementary school teacher at a charter school in Indianapolis.
It is also ironic that he attended college in two state capitals, since Butler is in Indianapolis and VCU is in Richmond.
Mrs. Schmitz said her son will get his formal medical degree on July 1 and will then begin working in the emergency room of Hendricks Community Hospital in Hendricks County in suburban Indianapolis.
