Democrat Kristopher Burkhart, a lifelong Adams County resident, has announced he is seeking the position of Adams County Coroner.
Burkhart is the second person to announce his candidacy, with Assistant Coroner Leslie Cook, a Republican, announcing her candidacy last week.
Burkhart, a 1996 graduate of Adams Central High School, is currently employed by Adams Memorial Hospital, is a part-time 911 dispatcher for the Adams County Sheriff's Department, and has been a member of the Monroe Fire and Rescue squad since 1996.
In a press release, Burkhart stated he has been a nationally registered paramedic since 2004 and currently holds certifications in advanced cardiac life support, pediatric education for pre-hospital professionals, pre-hospital trauma life support, and CPR.
Burkhart also reported that he holds awareness level certifications in the seven rescue disciplines, which includes swift water rescue, trench rescue, vehicle and machinery rescue, rope rescue, structural collapse rescue, confined space rescue, and wilderness rescue.
His current position includes, but is not limited to, responding to emergency calls, critical and non-critical patient transfers from hospital to hospital, and emergency room support.
Burkhart said he also participates in public education programs providing first aid education to Boy Scout troops, church groups, and elementary kids.
In September of 2010, Burkhart said, he spent two weeks off the coast of Louisiana in the BP Gulf oil spill disaster. His assignment was to provide medical; aid to workers cleaning oil off the shores of Louisiana.
"As coroner," said Burkhart, "I believe that I have the professionalism and experience required to provide families in their time of need. I believe in honesty, integrity, and compassion. All qualities needed to assist the community the best I can."
Burkhart and his wife of 14 years, Rachel, live in Monroe with their two children and attend St. Luke church in rural Decatur.
Burkhart is the son of Gary Burkhart and Debra Giessler, both of Monroe.
