YORKTOWN— The Braves mat men finished third place at the annual Yorktown Super Duals on Saturday going 3-2 against some of the state's stiffer competition.
Bellmont's only losses on the day came against a pair of ranked teams in the state in #8 Yorktown and #10 New Palestine but the Braves posted wins against New Albany, Delta, and a close match against Cincinnati LaSalle.
New Albany was no match for BHS to start the tourney as the Braves were big winners 69-12 benefitting from 10 pins including an impressive 27-second affair from Aaron Bergman.
In round two, Bellmont faced off with Delta winning in another landslide 66-9.
Trevor Gray hit a spladle and Daniel Gunsett a headlock for two pins to start the round. Grant Gutierrez hit a late reversal and near fall for his first career varsity win, an 8-5 decision, while Joseph Becker needed only 14 seconds for his side cradle fall and Jordan Amacker hit five takedowns in 12-11 decision.     Logan Neher lost a 9-5 decision but then the Braves scored seven falls in a row including a Bryce Baumgartner corkscrew at 3:09, Trevor Love chin ripped his opponent for a 22-second fall, Corey Coshow gave up the opening takedown at 182 but hit a late reversal and grape vine at the 1:50 mark, Carter Friedt hit a chin drop, Drew Butler a headlock, and Bergman a strong pancake completing the run of points.
Mason Mendez was down 7-1 early in his match but bounced back and took the lead 10-7 before locking up a side cradle at 4:45 for the pin.
Only five wins were recorded for the Braves in their third match against New Palestine in a 49-21 defeat.
At 138, Becker scored a 4-0 decision for his third win of the day, while Danny Baker hit a takedown and escape to take a 3-2 lead before turning his opponent with a strong chicken wing for a third period fall.     Baumgartner received a forfeit at 160 to tie the team score up at 15-15, but Bellmont could only get two more wins in the match.
Coshow hit a take down and quick stack for a 35-second pin, then at 106 Mendez knocked off state-ranked Alec White in an exciting overtime win with a last second reversal in period three to tie it up followed by a double leg in overtime for the big win.
