Braves take fourth in DeKalb Invite

August 23, 2012

WATERLOO—The Bellmont boys tennis team ventured to DeKalb High School for an eight-team tennis invitational Saturday in what would end up being their first true test of the season.
The Braves ended up fourth as a team with feelings that they, "could have done better," according to Bellmont coach Joe Selking.
Angola ran away with the tournament, which was structured to give nine points for each first place finisher, six for second, four for third, three for fourth, two for fifth, and one point for sixth place. The Hornets finished with 42 points with first place wins at all three singles positions and number one doubles with their number two doubles team taking second place for six points.
In the race for second place, the host team DeKalb finished second with 21 points, East Noble was third with 18, Bellmont finished fourth just behind with 16 points, and Northwood, Norwell, Jay County, and West Noble finished behind the Braves respectively.
Sophomore Evan Selking certainly got a taste of what it will be like to compete at the number one singles position as he drew Angola's Jake Stump, the eventual winner at that position, in the first round losing 6-0, 6-2. From that match, Selking jumped straight into the loser's bracket with 5th place as the best possible outcome.
Northwood's Mitchell Keiser was Selking's next opponent and Evan advanced to the fifth place match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. He would lose to East Noble's Matt Stallman in that contest 8-1 in a superset match.
Bellmont's Mason Selking had one of the better tournament showings out of all the Braves finishing second at number three singles.
"He played great the entire tournament," coach Selking noted. "It was some of the best tennis he's played to date."
