Braves move on to golf regionals

June 5, 2012

For the first time since 1976, the Bellmont Braves' golf team will be playing in the regional finals thanks to a second place finish at Timberidge, Norwell's course, on Friday night.
The qualifying is Bellmont's third regional berth in school history with the only others being in '72 and '76.
The Braves were a second place finisher as a team behind Marion's 332 stroke finish for the gold and just one stroke ahead of Huntington North's third place 343. Heritage just missed the cut with a team score of 352, Norwell fourth with a 353, and Mississinewa was fifth with a 355.
    Other team finishes were: Madison-Grant (7th, 356), Eastbrook (8th, 360), Blackford (9th, 369), Bluffton (10th, 374), South Adams (11th, 377), Southern Wells (12th, 412), and Adams Central (13th, 428).
The top three teams move on to the regional level as do the top three individuals whose teams did not advance.
Marion's Jordan Drook and Grant Meese of Huntington North each shot a round-low 79 on the course with Drook taking first on a playoff. Zach Wetzel and Chase Ellsworth each tied for third place representing Bellmont with an 80. Scott Atkins of Mississinewa and Zach Seeler of Marion also shot 80s on the 18-hole event.
Atkins, despite a fifth place finish, was the first individual to move on due to his team's absence in the regionals as will Zeke Lockwood 83 (also from Mississinewa) and Norwell's McCallister Clouser 84.
Bellmont's other shooters helping to seal their spot in regionals were Nathan Kortenber (90), Corey Coshow (92), and Andy Hess (93).
For South Adams, Chase Mosser was the only Star under 90 with a score of 88 and Josh Thieme of Adams Central shot a Jet-low of 96.
Bellmont will move on with Marion, Huntington North, and the three individuals who qualified in the regional to be hosted by Muncie Central's The Players Club Course along with the sectional winners from Monroe Central, Noblesville, and Richmond. The field of 12 teams and a combined 72 individuals will compete on Friday for the right to move on to the state finals held at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin on June 12 and 13.
