Braves handle Columbia City with ease

Despite a shift that sent five wrestlers up a weight division, Bellmont scored six falls, took two forfeits and won nine of 12 matches to dump NHC foe Columbia City 58-15 in the season opener Tuesday night at the Teepee.
It was also a somber night as Bellmont dedicated a new wrestling mat in honor of the late John Friedt, one of the organizers of the Decatur Wrestling Club and a coach at Bellmont for over 30 years. The mat will be used for both varsity and middle school meets.
Former BHS wrestler John Kintz read a tribute to Friedt, which was written by Mick Friedt, John's brother. "John and (his wife) Mary have spent their lives giving to this community and helping others in so many ways. Their wish is to pass it on and for others to make a difference. In dedication to John and his ever giving love to the sport of wrestling, take time today — every day — and find a way to 'pay it forward' to share their message," challenged Kintz.
"We had a lot of former wrestlers and a lot of fans here. It was a nice tribute," said Coach Brent Faurote. "But it was tough seeing those (wrestling) shoes out there at center mat. All year long I've been looking at that door (in the wrestling room) waiting for John to walk in. He was a part of my staff through every moment I've had, the good times and the bad. It is different this year" without him.
Scoring falls for the Braves were Bobby Keuneke at 120, Blake Adams at 126, Jacob Girod at 132, Brooks Faurote at 145, Brad Busse at 195 and Ben Baker at 220.
The Braves will participate in the Super Duals at Yorktown on Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m. The No. 8 Braves and the No. 9 Yorkies will clash in round six, at about 4 p.m. In order, the Braves will take on: LaPorte, Delta, bye in round three, Huntington North, Garrett and then the hosts.
