PORTLAND—Bellmont's 400 freestyle relay teams left nothing to chance Saturday by sweeping the top two positions in the final race of the day and the Braves captured the boys title of the Jay County Swimming Invitational over four other teams.
With the Bellmont team turning in 20 personal best efforts of the day, the Braves entered the 400 freestyle relay ahead of a strong Connersville team by just eight points. Matt Mock, Michael Miller, Zac Torrey, and Jay Watters made sure the team title would go home with the Braves as they turned in a 3:27.75 finish for first place and for added insurance Mason Werling, Trey Schisler, Harrison Jacobson, and Mason Schultz notched second in 3:43.53.
Bellmont rolled up 408 points in the meet for the victory while Connersville ended up second at 378. Other participants were Jay County 267, Marion 120, and Muncie South 117.
"I was a little concerned that we would have a little let down after our good performance at the conference meet (the previous Saturday). It is difficult to get fired up and swim well on consecutive weeks. We had some very good swims though," said BHS coach Drew Norby.
The Braves had a strong start in the meet scoring second and fifth in the 200 medley relay, Torrey and Mock were two-three in the 200 freestyle, and Miller, Werling, and Schisler went two-three-five in the 200 IM.
The first win of the day went to Watters in the 50 freestyle in :22.44 while Austin McCord and Alec Elder earned points with a sixth and seventh place finish. Ben Turney had a season best effort in the diving competition by 50 points and ended up second with 301.65.
Bellmont had a second and sixth finish in the 100 butterfly, but then totally dominated the next two events, the 100 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Watters broke the :50.0 barrier for the first time this year going :49.99 in the 100 while Torrey was third and McCord fifth. An even more impressive showing was established in the 500 race as Miller and Mock matched stroke-for-stroke to the finish line with Miller edging his teammate out 5:25.41 to 5:25.76. Adam Ralston was fourth in the event for BHS.
The 200 freestyle relay found Bellmont grabbing second and fifth which gave the Braves a 40 point lead in the match. Connersville rallied with wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke bringing the meet to its final event in which the Braves swept the top two spots for the victory.
