The Adams County Health Department (ACHD) issued an alert today over alleged scam artists posing as Indiana State Department of Health food inspectors in area restaurants.
ACHD Sanitarian Terry Smith said this morning that he has been notified these imposters have been active in at least two area counties.
Primarily, the impersonators have been preying on Oriental and perhaps Hispanic establishments, Smith said. The individuals will cite establishments for bogus violations, fine the establishments and then demand payment of fines before they will leave.
Adams County currently has three Oriental and three Hispanic food establishments.
Smith said that in addition to himself, the only authorized food inspectors in Adams County are Richard Thompson and Joe Spaulding. All three carry state-issue identification, he noted.
If someone comes to a restaurant other than those three individuals and wants to do a health department inspection, Smith said store personnel are asked to call the Adams County Health Department (724-5326) immediately along with their local police department or the Adams County Sheriff's Department.
