The Decatur Dirty Birds baseball team downed the Warsaw Indians, 5-0, at South Bend recently to take over second place in their conference. The Birds bested the Indians 2-1 in a three-game series.
Ryan Leugers got the win, beating former minor league hurler Adam Augustine, who only lasted four innings. Leugers went seven innings, with two strikeouts and one walk. Ian Clay threw two innings of scoreless relief for the Birds.
Here's how the Dirty Birds scored:
—In the fourth, Jake Owens tripled, then scored when the outfield throw got away from the third baseman.
—In the fifth, Corey Marchant hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Tarnowski.
—In the sixth, Bryan Brudi led off with a double and came home on a single by Corey Oetting, who was replaced by pinch runner Eric May. Owens singled, then Marchant nailed a single to drive in May and Owens.
The Birds play at Bellmont High School today at 7:15 p.m. against the Portland Rockets. Tony Sedlmeyer, a former Purdue player, will be the starting DB pitcher.
