Sewer rates in Berne could be going up more than originally anticipated.
While final financing for a proposed $3.9 million upgrade to the city of Berne's waste water treatment plant will ultimately determine the final scope of that rate hike, various scenarios laid out before Berne City Council on Monday suggest that the increase will be more than the $5-7 monthly that was anticipated earlier this year.
Jeffrey Rowe from Umbaugh and Associates, the city's rate consulting firm, presented several rate options for city officials to consider in conjunction with the waste water plant upgrade.
The city is under orders from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to reduce the amount of ammonia contained in waste water effluent that is being discharged from the treatment plant to area rivers and streams. Improvements must be completed by 2015.
