Berne plans to scrap playground pieces deemed to be unsafe

February 26, 2013

Equipment to be installed at Lehman Park

Two pieces of playground equipment at Berne's Lehman Park, deemed by the city's insurance carrier to be unsafe, will be sent to the scrap heap following a decision Monday by the city council not to permit the equipment to be utilized by an independent organization.
New playground equipment will be installed in Lehman Park this spring, and the city council for months has wrestled over where the new equipment will be placed and what would be the fate of several old playground devices.
In October, the city council agreed to remove two pieces of equipment — known locally as the "witch's hat" and the "swinging gate" — from Lehman Park after they been deemed safety hazards in a report issued by the Indiana Municipal Insurance Program. The report made several recommendations to improve safety at the park.
