Berne has parcel of real estate for sale

The city of Berne has a parcel of real estate for sale, although potential buyers may be few and far between.
Berne City Council on Monday agreed to offer for sale a .26-acre tract of land, located at the former site of a municipal water tower at the intersection of Welty and Berne streets, for the low price of $3,400.
City attorney Jim Beitler said special rules apply for the sale of municipal property valued at less than $15,000. Two appraisals of the property set the value of the Berne site at $1,750.
Beitler said state law allows the city to make direct appeals to abutting property owners — Smith Bros. furniture is the only neighbor in this instance — for the property sale. He said the statute also allows the city to include incidental costs such as the cost of a survey, appraisals, title insurance and recording costs, into the proposed purchase price.
Council agreed on the $3,400 asking price, and Beitler said that figure would be published in a legal advertisement offering the parcel for sale.
In other business at the meeting, council authorized a $2,500 payment to the Berne Community Development Corp. as the city's second and final installment of matching funds for the CDC's downtown enhancement signage grant.
Also approved was the appointment of Van Wulliman to the South Adams Senior Center board of directors. Wulliman will replace Blaine Fulton, who is retiring from the board.
