Berne city council okays purchase of badly-needed fire pumper/tanker

February 28, 2014

The ever-present green fire tuck of the Berne Fire Department, which is about 35-years-old, may soon be a thing of the past.
Berne Fire Chief John Crider met with city council Monday evening to request permission to seek bids for a new pumper tanker for the department. The new pumper tanker would hold 3,000 gallons of water and would be used for both city and rural fires.
“During my time on the department, there have been many structures that could have been saved if we had a larger pumper tanker,” Crider said. “There were times we simply ran out of water and couldn’t get more to the scene in time to save the structure.”
