Berne 2-step hike of sewer rates is likely

June 26, 2013

Berne City Council, during an informal discussion near the end of Monday evening's regularly-scheduled meeting, voted to direct its rate consultant to draft a two-phase increase in city sewage utility rates.
Jeffrey Rowe from Umbaugh and Associates, the city's rate consulting firm, earlier this month presented several rate options for city officials to consider in conjunction with a state-mandated upgrade to Berne's waste water plant.
The city is under orders from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to reduce the amount of ammonia contained in waste water effluent that is being discharged from the treatment plant to area rivers and streams. Improvements must be completed by 2015.
